Talismoon Whisper Max Installed
After my Linksys "version 1" Media Center Extender died last week I decided it was finally time to break down and replace it with an Xbox 360. I knew that the 360 was too loud to use in the bedroom but it is the only extender that can do "dual duty" by connecting to both MCE 2005 and Vista Media Center boxes.
Needless to say after I hooked it up I was reminded why I rejected the 360 as a MCX the first time - the fans drive me nuts. I knew there was a quieter fan out there so I fired up the Mac and started shopping for one. A few minutes later I had a Talismoon Whisper Max and a 360 opening tool on the way from eBay.

Last night I finally got the guts (and time) together to open my 360 and install it. I have to say that with the tool (one of the best $8 I've ever spent) it went relatively painlessly. The fan install itself is completely trivial of course, it's getting to the damn thing that is a pain in the butt. I didn't bother installing the turbo switch and cable and I pulled all of the LEDs out because I don't really want the 360 emitting an alien glow at night while I'm trying to watch TV in bed.
And now for the answer to the burning question... Does it work? The answer is yes, although not as much as I had hoped. It's definitely quieter and that's cool but it's not quite quiet enough for me. Still... Any improvement is welcome and it does move more air than the stock fan. I give it a thumbs up.
